It’s a question some of us might not ask ourselves as often as we should. These are good opportunities to give it a through think and to ourselves what we think is most important in our life, and why we are doing what we are doing. Yet it can come handy if asked this at a job interview; if your passion is not your job, you may not want to give it excessive importance.

What is passion? Most people agree a passion must be something that transcends common everyday desires, such as sleeping, eating, drinking or sex. A passion has been described as an activity that makes someone feel they belong to themselves. A passion is some sort of relief.

Ask yourself questions. We may still feel the urge of wondering further: what deserves most of my free time and energy? Some argue time and energy is true human wealth instead of financial assets. Yet, you might be blocked by other activities or even people that prevent you from dwelling into your passion. Then consider this: What would you do if you suddenly won a vast amount of money? Would you like to paint, maybe sing, would you travel the world?

Generally, interviewers or recruiters ask this question wanting to inspect your personality or figure out your passion towards life, then your passion on work. Ways now break up the question what are you passionate about into a series of step that may be able to guide us from here:

Stick to the Topic: Your passion most certainly falls into a certain topic. Try getting more involved in it. It might have to do with sports, creativity, technology, or culture.

Focus on an Object: Most passions are leaning into an object of desire. By object we can also mean living beings. It could be your family, friends, or animals in general, or buildings, books, flowers, etc.

Involve an Action: Consider your passion as involving a movement towards the object of your desires. It does not have to necessarily be the case, though. It might involve a direct action on the object, like the way a sculptor works his/her material.

Include Your Skills: The action mentioned above might require a certain skill you probably need in order to perform the action adequately. It will more rewarding for you to focus on your naturally given abilities, eases or talents.

Present the Outcome: This might be the most important component of the question posed. It contains what you are trying to achieve. It’s therefore very difficult to answer. After all, if you knew it you probably wouldn't be reading this.

Express Your Purpose: This one is intimately linked with the last one. It’s about your motives. It would answer the “why?” part of the question, giving meaning to it.

I have always loved helping other people.
