We’ve all heard about the silent messages we send through our body language, but did you know your sleeping positions may possibly tell something about your personality as well. Besides, your sleep positions may also have positive or negative effects on your health. Most people have a preferred sleeping position that they’ve maintained since childhood or their teenage years. If you are forced to change that position, you probably have trouble sleeping and spend a restless night.

The director of the UK Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service, Professor Chris Idzikowsk has been studying sleeping positions meaning and made some interesting discoveries. He thinks that there are 6 most common sleeping positions that can be linked to personality. And many body language specialists agree. Now let's get a closer look at sleeping positions meaning and see if you can spot yourself in the mix.

What Are Your Sleeping Positions meanings?

1

The Fetal Position (aka ‘The Thinker’)

Professor Idzikowsk found that the most common sleeping position people preferred is the fetal position, used by 41% of people. If you look at women only, that number soars to 51%. In this case, a person sleeps on his side, curled, with knees bent, drawn towards the stomach, and arms upraised to rest on the pillow. Or one arm may be tucked underneath the pillow and one hand is always lying near the chin. This position may indicate an attempt to comfort oneself

Those who prefer the fetal position are thought to be thick-skinned and tough on the outside but emotional and sensitive on the interior. They may seem shy at first but relax quickly and they are warm, organized, and conscientious. This position may place stress on the back so it is recommended that those who sleep like this put a pillow between the knees to relieve the stress.

2

The Log or Side Sleepers

Preferred by approximately 15% of the participants, this position is performed by lying straight on one side with arms extended downward. Personality traits of those who sleep in the log position include a trusting nature. They enjoy social activities and are easy-going people who like to be part of the crowd.

Because people who prefer the log position often sleep on one of their hands, it is difficult to find a comfortable position for the neck and head. Finding a pillow that fits and is soft enough to comfort the face may also be challenging. Besides, due to gravity, side sleeping may accelerate the formation of facial wrinkles or sagging breasts.

3

The Yearner

This is a variation of the fetal position and is preferred by 13% of people. The yearner sleeps with his legs slightly bent and the head slightly angled off the center of the pillow. Their arms are often stretched forward as though reaching for something.

The personality traits indicated include an open nature but they may also be cynical and suspicious. Although slow to make a decision, once their minds are made up they seldom change it. This is another sleeping position that is hard on the neck and makes finding the proper pillow difficult.

4

The Soldier

Favored by 8% of the people, the soldier sleeps at attention on her back with arms down. People who prefer this position are often reserved and quiet. And they will set high standards for themselves and others.

People who sleep on their backs are often snorers which can make them prone to sleep apnea. However, doctors say this is the best position for back and neck health.

5

Freefall

If you sleep on your stomach with your head turned to the side and your arms embracing the pillow, you are one of 7% who prefer the sleeping position of freefall. Those who like the freefall position are often extroverted and impetuous. They don’t like to be put in tense situations and don’t take criticism well.

Although compared to other positions, it is easier on the digestive system, it is said this position is hardest on the back because there is little support beneath the curve of the spine. It is recommended that you place a pillow beneath your lower abdomen and pelvis to ease the strain.

6

The Starfish

When you sleep on your back with your arms and legs spread out, you are considered a starfish. Starfish often make good friends because they prefer to stay out of the limelight, are good listeners and always willing to help.

Like soldiers, this position also often leads to snoring. It is another position that is hard on the back and it is suggested that a pillow be placed under the knees to relieve the strain.

What Does Sleeping Positons Reveal About Your Relationship?

Since we have known the sleeping positions meaning as an individual, now you might also be curious about what sleeping positions say about your relationships. A national hotel chain surveyed couples and discovered that 46% couples prefer to sleep with their backs to each other. A quarter of them admitted they usually don't touch each other while sleeping. Curious now? Let's know more.
1

The Honeymoon Hug

This position involves sleeping face to face with arms and legs entwined. This is the most intimate position couples can share as they sleep. It is a common position to fall asleep in after lovemaking, but a difficult position to maintain for the whole night. Many couples stop sleeping in this position after the initial ‘honeymoon phase’ is past.

2

Spooners

Spooning is a very popular sleep position for couples. Both people assume a semi-fetal position and one partner presses their front against the back of the other. This clearly symbolizes a feeling of security and trust between partners.

3

Back to Back Sleepers

The sleep position meaning of back to back sleeping is usually positive. It shows that the couple has a sexual bond, especially if their bottoms or feet touch; but they are both confident and independent in characteristics. If this is not a normal sleeping position for you and your mate and happens suddenly, it could be a sign that there is tension or anger brewing.
