Uterine lining, the home of the fertilized egg, contains nutrients and blood that take care of the fertilize eggs. After the fertilized egg travels to the uterus, the fertilized eggs get implanted. Implantation of fertilized egg causes the bleeding.

Implantation bleeding is light and is considered very normal; however, in some cases, heavy implantation bleeding is observed. It is important to determine whether the implantation bleeding is normal or not in order to decide when to seek immediate medical care.

Understand the Differences Among Implantation Bleeding, Spotting and Menstrual Periods

Most women of childbearing age are so anxious when they see vaginal bleeding that do not fit with their normal menstrual cycles. Some women think that it is part of dysfunctional uterine bleeding while others just pass it as implantation bleeding. However, the concern will grow when there is heavy implantation bleeding spotted.

Implantation Bleeding

Implantation bleeding occurs 10 to 14 days after the exact date of conception and it is expected before menstrual period. If you have conceived on the 7th day, it is likely that you will experience implantation bleeding between the 17th to 21st days. The condition is normal and should not cause any concern.

Implantation bleeding occurs when there is actual physical implantation of fertilized ovum in the uterine lining. It may appear lighter in consistency and the color is pink to brown.

Spotting

Discharges are very similar to implantation bleeding, but spotting is very different. Spotting usually occurs more often especially between menstrual periods. This type of bleeding is known as intermentstrual bleeding or as metrorrhagia.

Spotting occurs due to the normal or irregular ovulation and use of oral contraceptives. Other possible causes are uterine fibroids, hormonal imbalances, physical trauma, endometriosis, cervical cancer and other kinds of cancer of reproductive system.

Menstrual Periods

Normal menstruation lasts about 4 days with additional 2-3 days more or less. Regular menstrual cycles occur on the 28th day of a cycle. Irregular periods may occur seven days earlier or later. Menstrual periods is characterized with colour of red and mild to heavy amount. In some cases, the menstrual periods are accompanied with clots.

Can Implantation Bleeding Be Heavy?

If you are one of many women who were wondering if implantation bleeding can be heavy, well, the egg size is really minimal and the quantity of the blood is few that some women may not even be able to observe it. In most cases, the spotting is light to medium and the color may appear brown or pinkish. Also in majority instances, a woman may observe one or few drops of blood.

However, in rare cases, heavy implantation bleeding may occur, but it is just like a menstrual cycle that may stop on its own. The length of implantation bleeding may vary among women. The spotting may last from several hours to days.

What to Do When Spotting or Experiencing Heavy Implantation Bleeding

Normal implantation bleeding is light and may only last for a very short while. However, there are some signs that you can’t ignore, especially when you observe heavy implantation bleeding.

If you observe any of the following associated with heavy bleeding, consult your health care provider immediately:

  • Heavy bleeding and too much bleeding when your pregnancy is confirmed.

  • Bleeding after post menopause.

  • Recurring and extended heavy bleeding that accompanies your regular periods.

  • Light headedness, pain and lethargy accompanies your vaginal bleeding.

  • Pathological spotting is observed. Pathological spotting is a sign of uterine fibroids, endometriosis and cancer in any reproductive areas.

Likewise, heavy implantation bleeding can also be a sign of miscarriage. Check your doctor to know if you are in doubt.
