Studies conducted by US researchers found that men who suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED) have a 70 percent higher chance of dying early than males who are able to perform normally. Often considered a problem in men over 40, scientists are quickly realizing that this condition is also prevalent in young men. A study conducted at an outpatient facility in Milan, and published in the "Journal of Sexual Medicine", found that out of every four men who were treated for erectile dysfunction one was under the age of 40.

Tracking the average age of 439 male patients who complained of ED, it was noted that 26 percent were 39 years of age or younger. The study also reported that age can determine how the dysfunction affects a patient's life, and over half of those under 40 stated that it is severe. While older men might not be as severely affected by ED they do have an increased risk of developing Peyronie's disease, which occurs when scar tissue causes the penis to bend. Men under 40 are more likely to have problems with premature ejaculation, and both of these conditions can be a cause or a result of ED.

With the condition becoming more prevalent in men under 40 and being linked as a possible cause of early death it is important to learn all of information regarding ED.

Erectile Dysfunction Under 40's: Facts, Causes and Cure

1

Causes of ED

An erectile dysfunction can be caused by several factors, which includes lifestyle choices. Men under 40 are more likely to use illicit drugs and tobacco products, which can interfere with the cardiovascular system. The loss of blood flow to the penis often makes it difficult for men to achieve and sustain an erection. Feelings of depression, along with heart disease and diabetes can also cause ED in some younger men. One of the most common causes of an erectile dysfunction is stress. Problems at work or with friends and family can make it difficult to concentrate during sexual activity. It can also cause depression and other conditions that often result in a sexual dysfunction.

2

Symptoms of Severe ED

Age can play a large role in determining if the erectile dysfunction is severe or not. Older men often view occasional erectile problems as a normal part of the aging process, and only seek advice from a health care professional if the condition continues for an extended period of time. Men under 40 are generally more sexually active, and problems sustaining an erection once or twice is often seen as a severe condition.

3

When to visit a health care professional

It is normal for men at any age to occasionally experience erectile difficulties caused by daily stress and fatigue, and this does not necessarily mean that it is the start of an ongoing sexual dysfunction. If the problem persists and begins to interfere with a relationship or other aspects of your life it is probably best that you seek help from a health care professional. An erectile dysfunction can also be an indication of a serious health condition or an unpleasant side effect of certain medications.

How to treat ED

It is not uncommon for men to be too ashamed or embarrassed to seek help for their erectile dysfunction, but for those willing to admit they have a problem there are several treatment options to choose from. Many men find that simply eating healthier and adding exercise to their daily routines helps to improve their sex life. Circulation often improves, along with overall health. This often results in blood being able to reach the penis faster, along with improving stamina. Studies indicate that men who eat a balanced diet not only have a reduced risk of developing ED, but also find it easier to maintain a healthy weight.

Keeping excess weight off also has the added benefit of reducing your risk of developing diabetes or heart disease later in life. Not only will this help prolong your life, but it can also prevent you from developing an erectile dysfunction. An additional problem men who are carrying excess weight often face is that their penis can become lost, which can make it difficult to sustain an erection. With regular daily exercise it is possible to maintain a healthy weight, and enjoy an active sex life. Staying fit an healthy also improves stamina in the bedroom, along with confidence.

5

Exercising your penis

Many men are finding that erectile dysfunction exercises can help improve their sex lives. Using a penile pump can improve blood flow and prevent a sexual dysfunction from occurring later in life. Someone that is already suffering from ED can also benefit from the use of a pump. When the penis is kept healthy erections are generally able to last longer, and orgasms are often stronger. Some men also seem an improvement in their ED when they use toys. While this won't treat the underlying cause of the dysfunction, it can make it easier for men under 40 to get and sustain an erection.

As always if there is any pain or the symptoms are ongoing it is important to speak to a health care professional.
