Since I was not yet even one year old when this occured it affected me only 2ondarily. That is to say it has been my understanding that the three dictators of Japan, Italy and Germany either had or were conspiring to take control of the entire planet and divide it up. They were doing a pretty good job of it and may have succeded had not the U.S. been attacked and retaliated. Japan needed territory and resources for it's population and expanding manufacturing base, they began expanding into China and south Asia, the Japanese were committing terrible atrocities, our government was lobbied for support and we enacted "Sanctions" similar to what has been done to present day Iran. The Japanese ambassador in Washington DC was directed to stall talks with the US on this issue and to give misinformation (lie) in order to make time for the Japanese military to position them selfs you see in the 30s the Philippines where an American territory much like Puerto Rico having gained possession from the Spanish at the end of the Spanish American war.we had lots of Americans in the Philippines and business. And the Japanese wanted it very badly. And all that time we thought we were negotiating the situation to an amicable peaceful resolution. basicly the same almost exact situation we now have with China. at the same time the invasion of Austriala was already planned and was stopped by the US at Midway Japan had intended to take pupa new Genia and launch invasion of Australia, the Japanise leadership gambled on the disabling our fleet in the pacific we would not be able to respond and once Japan had the resources of labor (Philiphines, China) And resources (Australia, southeast Asia) they would be dominant on the pacific and the Orient.

I know the history, but thinking about it , it dos'nt make sense. They must have known that this would bring America into the war, They didn't try and occupy the island, in fact seeing that it is not part of Asia I can't see anything that makes sense. They didn't attack America at all, which is where the could have done the most damage, just one little island in the other direction from where they were going.
