You should remove the "chewing gum" advice, because this makes jaw clenching worse.

mouthguards have been proven to exacerbate teeth clenching, and are not advisable according to the latest research.

OMG I spent quite a bit on custom made mouth guard on the advice of the dentist and got poor results. Now I clench harder on the mouth guard and makes my mouth tired. This is all all gimmick for the dentist to make money. I waisted money for nothing. This is in Kuala Lumpur. It cost Malaysia Ringgit Six Hundred and Fifty. Malaysian Dental Association should look into the pricing and should discipline the dentist. I am just a wage earner and they took advantage of my weakness. Jason Yen

I find that the more i think about it the more I do it. I am in so much pain right now, I chew through my mouth guards and pain killers do not touch it. The more I try to release the tension by massaging, the more I make it sore. Its a horrible pain in my face and always at the front of my mind. i am not stressed other than this stupid condition. Feeling like I just go round in a vicious cycle.

Most suggestions for stopping jaw clenching are ineffective. In particular, the suggestion to get a mouthguard is useless. You can still clench or grind and wake up with all the painful effects while using a mouthguard. Some relief can come from muscle relaxants, but it is temporary, and many such drugs are addictive. There doesn't seem to be any really effective treatment...

@ : Hi Germaine, it is a misconception that a mouth guard will stop teeth grinding. IMO they are not meant to stop the grinding but to protect your teeth fromthe damage caused by long-term and persistent grinding. Grinding can slowly break down the surface of the teeth or crack them including the cracking the surface enamel. Grinding can also cause root canal issues and gum disease. Most important bit of advise is not to give up so easily. I have had severe bruxism all my life (62yo) and have found that meditation and physical exercise combined with warm compresses, valerian supplement or tea, turmeric and warm milk before bed. Experiment and see what works best for you. and good luck!

My clenching has gotten so bad my cheek Noam's hurt. I am afraid I may break something more than a tooth. Caffeine no caffeine, relaxed or not, stressed or not, It doesn't seem to mater. Maybe I should create a tension realving training device. Yep I will do that!

It all started when I went to see my dentist for a broken tooth. I was diagnosed with night bruxism and was prescribed with an expensive mouth guard. I have been sincerely using it for a year and a half now. I am still breaking teeth and I have developed host of other dental issues with it including difficulty chewing on the right side. For my dismay, I was told that when taking the impression for the mouth guard, my dentist forgot to include the wisdom tooth on the top left jaw. Over the time, due to lack of support, the wisdom tooth started receding. And that caused severe open bite problem. As a solution to this problem, and as per my dentist's advice, I got my wisdom tooth removed two weeks ago. It has only seeming to worsen the situation. now, I can only hope that there is a solution for this issue.

I too suffer from nighttime clenching. I had a mouthguard, but it was more like a doggy chew toy in my mouth and I would wake up with a sore jaw in the morning. Really ineffectual. The cause of this is work related stress, but unless I hit the jackpot in the lottery, I am stuck. I now have a the gum above the top molar swollen and tender. No tooth pain, but general pain on the top left teeth and a few of the left bottom. Would really like to find a real fix for this. The swelling might be an abscessed tooth, but there is no tooth pain or discomfort.
