Smoking may be allowed in fewer and fewer places, but that doesn’t stop celebrities who smoke from lighting up in public. Whether they took up smoking as a teen or later, the celebrities you didn’t know smoked cigarettes can’t seem to quit this bad habit.

From celebrities who seem to smoke for the weight loss benefits to those who simply enjoy tobacco, here are a few of the biggest names in Hollywood who love to smoke, and have even been photographed using electronic cigarettes.

Part 1

Miley Cyrus

21 year old Miley Cyrus has never been coy about her love of pot, but she was also caught off guard by the paparazzi when smoking tobacco. One vice that we’ll never see Miley take up seems to be drinking.

“I think alcohol is way more dangerous than marijuana - people can be mad at me for saying that, but I don’t care,” she told Rolling Stone magazine.

Keira Knightley

The young British actress is another addition to the list of celebrities you didn’t know smoked cigarettes and she was introduced to the habit by her mother. “My mother and I would always talk about sex. She’d come up to my room and have me roll cigarettes for her and then tell me I had to have one with her. Not the typical mother-daughter thing. But we’re extremely close. My mother’s a bit mental - in a good way. She’s a chilled-out hippie," she was quoted as saying by FemaleFirst.

Kate Winslet

Smoking for almost 20 years, Kate Winslet doesn’t seem to be able to kick the bad habit, but she definitely has it under control. “I don’t smoke around my kids. Like that makes it any better that I smoke at all, because obviously it doesn’t. But I don’t smoke in the house”, she told Vanity Fair magazine.

Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba is probably one of the celebrities you didn’t know smoked cigarettes, because she only took on the habit in 2011, after giving birth. Sources close to the star claim that chain smoking was just a way to get the pregnancy weight off faster, but she probably stopped, at least temporarily when getting pregnant again.

Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise’s ex-wife Katie Holmes has taken up smoking after moving to New York. Maybe she really wanted to go for the fashion designer lifestyle, after starting the brand “Holmes & Yang” with celebrity stylist Jeanne Yang. Their collaboration ended, but giving up smoking might be a lot harder than ending a collaboration.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Even though she’s passionate about a healthy lifestyle, which she promotes with her GOOP newsletter, Gwyneth Paltrow is one of the celebrities you didn’t know smoked cigarettes. She told Harper’s Bazaar that her guilty pleasure is “my one light American Spirit that I smoke once a week, on Saturday night."

Salma Hayek

After she started to smoke in 2002, while being on the set of the biopic “Frida”, Salma Hayek hasn’t been able to quit the habit. She’s claimed to give it up in 2007, but has continued to smoke, even after the birth of her daughter. Maybe having another celebrity smoker around doesn’t help since Hayek’s been photographed sharing a smoke with Penelope Cruz.

Is P!nk one of the celebrities you didn’t know smoked cigarettes? The singer has been a long-time smoker, but quit before the birth of her daughter. Pink told Today that giving up smoking has had very beneficial effects on her voice. After she stopped lighting up, P!nk manage to extend her upper vocal range by an octave.

Katherine Heigl

Even though she’s said that she’s “ashamed” of smoking, Katherine Heigl didn’t manage to quit altogether after adopting her daughter. Katherine Heigl only managed to upgrade to an electronic cigarette, not give up the habit completely.

Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen

The Olsen twins have both been photographed while smoking. They’re probably among the celebrities you didn’t know smoked cigarettes, because they’ve been avoiding the paparazzi for a while. Perhaps they took it up after moving to New York permanently and getting involved in the fashion world. Maybe launching their newest life in Norway will help them move on to healthier habits.
